Anyone who works in the transport industry will tell you, logistics is far from being a regular, 40 hour working week!

Earlier this year, our own MD Tim Wilson celebrated 25 years in the world of logistics.
Purely based on a 40 hour working week, that equates to over 52,000 hours working in the transport sector, giving Tim plenty of time to learn everything there is to know about the world of logistics!

But as anyone who works in the transport industry will tell you, logistics is far from being a regular, 40 hour working week vocation. Frequently involving working unsocial hours, customers and clients still need things transporting over the weekends, and Logistics World has seen a huge surge in demand for work on both Saturdays and Sundays.
In fact, the world of logistics is one of the UK’s largest employee sectors, with one in 12 people currently working in a logistics role… But the facts don’t just stop there!

1. Employing over 1.5 million people in the UK alone, logistics and transport is one of the world’s biggest industries, with the UK’s road transport industry being the biggest in Europe!

2. In just two years, the world of logistics delivers so many sausages, that they have travelled the equivalent distance of going to the moon and back!
3. 85% of everything we wear or eat has been transported by a UK lorry… Pretty much everywhere you go, be it a retail shop, a restaurant or pub, or even a place of historical interest, there’s usually something to buy, and these products need to be stored and transported before they’ve arrived at the vendors.

4. The transport industry is set to grow by 21% during the next 10 years – hardly surprising given that on average, a food item travels at least 1500 miles before it finally reaches your house.
5. The logistics sector delivers over four billion meals to restaurants and pubs across the UK every year, along with millions of pints of beer, equivalent to the internal volume of over 25,000 double-decker buses!

6. The world’s largest container ship can carry over 24,000 TEU’s (twenty-foot equivalent unit), which when fully laden is the same weight at 300 jumbo jets!
7. This same ship could carry the Eiffel Tower, obviously without the containers!

8. Did you know that the film Castaway, which starred Tom Hanks as a FedEx employee whose cargo plane crashes into the ocean, made nearly £300 million worldwide at the box office!
9. Whilst we’re on FedEx, have you ever noticed the hidden arrow in their logo? Once you’ve seen it, you’ll never look at it in the same way again! The clever use of the negative space between the last two letters has won them over 40 awards.
