What are the 7 R’s of logistics?

Regardless of the industry, it’s imperative to have an effective strategy in conjunction with great planning, design, and implementation, whilst managing, and ultimately tracking performance, to minimise operational costs and be successful!

In today’s world, every business needs to excel in its functionality to be successful and thrive, whilst best utilising all available resources.

No matter what the industry, the ethos is the same and should heavily involve having an effective strategy in conjunction with great planning, design, and implementation, whilst managing, and tracking performance, to ultimately minimise operational costs and be successful.

These strategic elements are commonly referred to as the 7 R’s in the world of logistical management, ultimately ensuring that the right product is in the right quantity and right condition, and is in the right place, at the right time, to the right customer at the right price, and this belief is shared by The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport UK.

The 7 R’s of logistical management is something that we uphold and implement at Logistics World. Whilst this approach might seem unnecessary and almost ‘formulaic’ to some, we believe it’s amongst the many reasons why we are surpassing our growth targets

- Tim Wilson, Managing Director at Logistics World

1. Right product

Any company who provides a service must clearly identify the types of product that they offer, and actually have the means to do this!

At Logistics World we offer many services including same day deliveries, refrigerated vehicles, driver hire and ADR transport, which involves the safe movement of dangerous goods such as chemicals by road.

Over 50% of our drivers now hold a specialist ADR licence, which allows us to safely transport hazardous materials, and with our same day service offering too, we even offer a same day ADR delivery service!”

2. Right quantity

This might seem obvious but in the world of logistics it’s crucial to know just how much of a specific product you’re required to collect and deliver, otherwise you can’t effectively plan the loads and indeed the vehicles required to deliver them.

As a general rule of thumb, our small vans can carry one standard pallet of up to 400kg, whilst our long wheel based vans can deliver up to 1200kg of goods, over four pallets. Our largest deliveries are handled by our Luton vehicles which are fitted with tail-lifts to aid loading and unloading, and our 7.5 and 18 tonne trucks that have either curtain or boxed sides.

3. Right condition

The product that any logistics team delivers should reach the customer in the same condition as it was collected in!

There is little point in offering a refrigerated delivery service, if the perishable, chilled or frozen items reach their final destination spoilt, or sending a single person to deliver fragile items, when in reality, the goods should have been transported under a white glove, two person team!

4. Right place

At Logistics World our entire fleet is GPS tracked, so that at any given time we can ascertain the exact location of a delivery, frequently monitoring its journey and updating our drivers, who have an extensive knowledge of the UK’s road network.

By doing this, and by also following many of the UK’s travel disruption updates, such as the ongoing improvements to the M6 junction 10, we can advise both our drivers and indeed our customers and clients of any unexpected or unforeseen issues to avoid unnecessary delays in goods getting to the correct destination.

5. Right time

Time is a crucial element when referring to logistical services, as the presence of any delay, even if they are out of anyone’s control can result in major cost implications.

Rather than delay a court hearing, important documents may be required to be sent by one legal team to another, frequently out of hours. Likewise, when urgent automotive or aeronautical parts are holding up a production line or an aeroplane, time really is of the essence, and as such our same day delivery service is the preferred means of transport by many of our clients.

6. Right customer

Choosing the right customer base is as important as identifying the services that you can offer.

With an extensive fleet of vehicles including sprinter vans, Luton tail-lifts, Euro 6 HGVs and courier vehicles, we can cater for the safe transport of many products including those that need an ADR licence and time sensitive documentation. As such, the Logistics World customer base is equally expansive, and includes clients in the aeronautical and automotive industries, the chilled food sector, the NHS and many legal practices.

7. Right price

Whilst there are many fluctuating ongoing costs, including the price of fuel and maintenance costs, in the world of logistics it’s imperative to have some standardisation when pricing for a service.

As such, Logistics World offers a simple to use, online quoting system, ideal for out of hours enquires or urgent same day deliveries.

At Logistics World, we believe we do get it right, so if your business is looking for a reliable transport provider, be sure to get in touch.
